Chapter I. Down the rabbit hole read:

Alice is tired of doing nothing. She sat on the Bank of the river, sometimes looking at the book her sister was reading, but there were no pictures in it. «What kind of book is it if there are no pictures in it?»- thought Alice. She began to think to herself (to the extent that it was possible to make a hot day, which led her to a sleepy and somewhat stupefied state) — whether the pleasure of weaving a wreath of daisies will justify the hardships associated with getting up and picking flowers. But then a White Rabbit with pink eyes slipped to her feet.

It was NOTHING special. And Alice didn't think it was very special to hear the Rabbit murmur to himself, «ay-ay-ay! I'm late.» (When she thought about it afterwards, she knew she should have been surprised, but then it seemed perfectly natural.) But when the Rabbit took THE WATCH out OF his WAISTCOAT POCKET, looked at it, and then picked up the pace, Alice sprang to her feet, for it occurred to her that she had never seen a rabbit with a waistcoat pocket, or take out a watch, and, burning with curiosity, ran across the lawn after him, and, fortunately, in time, saw him climb into a large rabbit hole

Alice immediately crawled behind him, without thinking about how she would be able then to get out. The rabbit hole first, went straight on like a tunnel, and then suddenly dived down, so suddenly that Alice had not time to think, only feel what falls down from a great height.

Either because the fall was very long, or she was falling very slowly, but she had enough time to look around and talk about what might happen next.

At first she tried to look down and find out where she was flying, but in such darkness nothing was visible. Then she looked at the walls of the well and saw that they were full of cupboards with dishes and bookshelves. And everywhere were hung paintings and maps. She managed to grab a jug from one of the shelves as she flew past. It was labeled orange marmalade, but to her great disappointment, it was empty. She was afraid to throw the jug down, so as not to hit someone in the head, and contrived to put it in one of the cupboards with dishes, when flying past him.

— Well, well! — thought Alice, — after this fall to count the steps on the stairs at home just child's play! And how brave everyone will think I am! However, I would not tell them anything, even if I fell from the roof ( and it was true).
